- a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.
Essential oils are typically distilled from the stem, leaves, flowers, bark, root or other elements of plants. It is the true essence of the plant itself. Most eo's are clear in color although some may be yellow or amber colored. These oils are not perfumes. When using an unadulterated oils, they offer therapeutic benefits to everyday ailments. I say UNADULTERATED because not all oils are created equal. Some companies add synthetic chemicals or compounds to their oils that can be harmful to the body! That said, safety should always be considered and practiced when using essential oils.
How Do They Work?
Essential oils are such tiny molecules that they have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Because of this, when they are used aromatically, topically or internally, essential oils can clean receptor sites allowing for better communication between cells.
